HSH THE ROLLS-ROYCE TRANSFER
For The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, Ltd., we documented the transfer of a retired Peninsula Hong Kong Rolls-Royce Phantom VII from Hong Kong to the National Motor Museum in Beaulieu, UK.
After 18 years serving guests at The Peninsula Hong Kong, the Phantom was being donated to the museum as part of the permanent collection. Our role was to document the transfer as it unfolded, from its departure in Hong Kong through its journey with Cathay Cargo to its arrival in the UK.

Documenting the Transfer
This was a production built around a process rather than a traditional shoot.
We followed the Phantom through the various stages of its transfer, capturing the preparation, handling, and logistics involved in moving a vehicle of its size and value internationally. The challenge was to document a highly controlled operation while allowing the story to unfold naturally. Access, timing and positioning were dictated by the transfer itself, leaving little room to repeat moments or reset a scene.
Our approach was therefore observational. We anticipated the action and stayed close to the process, letting the journey provide the narrative.
From Hong Kong to Beaulieu
The journey itself was anything but routine. The Phantom was transported to Cathay Cargo's terminal, where it was secured for its flight to the UK. Its size and value required specialized handling, while its classification as Class 9 Dangerous Goods added another layer of operational requirements.
Then the original flight plan changed.
Airspace disruptions in the Middle East called for a rerouting of the shipment to London, with the revised route requiring additional restrictions and approvals. Cathay Cargo's teams worked through the changes and coordinated the arrangements needed to keep the transfer moving.
For us, those changes became part of the story rather than something happening behind it.
Heritage in Motion
There was also something fitting about the partnership behind the journey. The Peninsula and Cathay Pacific share a long history in Hong Kong, with their relationship dating back decades. In 2026, the transfer also coincided with HSH's 160th anniversary and Cathay's 80th. Two institutions with deep connections to Hong Kong were coming together to move a piece of Peninsula history to its next home.
After 18 years in service at The Peninsula Hong Kong, the Phantom's arrival at Beaulieu marked the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. The car now forms part of the National Motor Museum's Driven: Britain's Motoring History gallery.
For us, the privilege was documenting that transition. A familiar sight in Hong Kong leaving the place where it had served generations of guests and beginning a new life thousands of miles away.
Some journeys are about getting somewhere. Others are about carrying a legacy forward.
